[About a week after Hijikata and Kaeya's last run-in, they happen to cross paths in Sunwaning (because of course Hijikata couldn't be arsed to follow up on their agreement with a phone call), and this time the samurai can't extricate himself with work excuses! (He doesn't really want to, either.) That same evening the two of them meet in a rustic bar in the city centre.]
I hope you brought a big wallet. Tonight's on you, after all.
[Honestly, Kaeya doesn't have to worry too much - Hijikata likes to drink, but he gets smashed relatively fast!]
Ha, that depends entirely on you and how well you can hold your liqueur, my friend.
[He really didn't mind, though. Even if Nightwake's prices were a bit steeper than Sunwaning. Alas, he did owe Hijikata and he wasn't about to be stingy about it either. It was a massive appreciation what Hijikata did for a kid Kaeya.]
Now, let's see what they have here...
[They sat down at an empty table near the bar itself, and Kaeya perused the menu for a bit. While he was alright with beer and cocktails and whatnot, his main vice was wine. Once he found a good red wine, he decided to start with that.]
[ Albedo's gift comes in a medium sized boxed. It's neatly, but plainly, wrapped with a blue bow on top. On the inside is what seems to be a decent quality camera and all the essentials for it. There's also a neatly written note: ]
Happy Birthday, Kaeya -
I hope that this finds you well, and that you take the time to enjoy the freedom that art can bring to you. You have an eye for it.
Hello, Kaeya. The confessions happening anonymously has me thinking there is something I need to tell you. I think it is far too long overdue. And, so you don't get worried unnecessarily, it has to do with myself and my Master.
If you'd like to meet somewhere, there's a place that has some good sweets we can meet at.
[By now, Kaeya had grown used to the monthly involuntarily moonlight ritual that was changing into a gargoyle for a few days at night. He had gained enough control of the form that he was able to do it at will outside of the full moon as well and it certainly came in handy during particularly strenuous quests with difficult beasts to cull.
But, tonight was a night of monster hunting or anything of the like. The moon was waning and thus, Kaeya was released from the his stony form for the time being. It was always a little uncomfortable changing into and changing from a gargoyle. The sun was rising as the wings and tail shifted back into him, the muscles of his back rippling and stretching for a moment. His horns, fangs, and claws also retreated. As always, he wore a backless shirt to prevent unnecessary clothes destruction and the pants he wore sat dangerously low on his hips for his tail. It was necessary as he was not willing to constantly press holes into his trousers.
He sighed tiredly as he stretched, a thin sheen of sweat on his skin from the effort it took for the form to retreat. He ran his fingers through his long, dark blue hair and pulled the strands over his shoulder so he could begin rebraiding the lengths after they'd come undone during his night out. The sky was beginning to brighten as the sun continued to rise but Kaeya was feeling like he could use a nap. And a drink of water, maybe. Maybe cuddling with Diluc for a couple hours before the man had to get up for work would suffice for now? Decisions, decisions...]
[By now, Diluc has grown used to these nightly forays of Kaeya's and does not always wait up for him to get back, worried what he might be getting up to and what danger he might be putting himself in.
Still, with how lightly he sleeps, he almost always wakes up to the sound of Kaeya returning home no matter how quiet he might try to be. This morning is no different in that regard, as he slips out of bed and walks through the house hiding a yawn against the back of his hand.
Kaeya does cut a stunning figure. Always, but especially in that shirt. While the man fiddles with the end of his hair Diluc approaches him from behind and trails his fingertips up the bared dip of his partner's spine.]
[Something flies right by Kaeya. More accurately, it crashes right by Kaeya. And then it catches fire and explodes, sending little bits and bobs of machinery out in every direction. Its not the biggest explosion Rui's caused by far, but the fact that there was someone near it sends him running over.]
Sorry, sorry. Are you alright? The process of invention can sometimes get a bit exciting, can't it?
[It was an automatic reaction that have Kaeya's Vision shield up all around it, the hexagonal pattern barely visible in its pale blue color. Still, Kaeya had his arms raised, ice sword in hand ready to catch whomever threw the unknown object and caused the explosion.
But, once he heard the youthful voice, genuinely apologetic, Kaeya sighed and willed the sword away. It faded away in icy mist, the Vision shield following soon after.]
I'm quite fine, but I would suggest testing... whatever that was, when there are less people around. Hm?
[ Venti appears when he hopes Kaeya will be home, and knocks. He wants to make sure he hand delivers the wine he picked up for his friend. Did he have a whole bottle of it before just so he could test it for quality? Absolutely.
It's not as good as Dandelion wine, of course, but it's nice and Venti hash zero complaints, so he hopes Kaeya feels the same.
He also wants to give Kaeya his birthday message in person and not leave a note. ]
[Kaeya's sleepy brain was not working as he read the note. He was warm in the bed, he was sorely tempted to go back to sleep. But the temptation of breakfast was hard to resist.
His blearily eyes finally took in the time from the clock on the nightstand and he sighed deeply through his nose.
Soon, he was shuffling out into the living room, rubbing his eyes awake and keeping a hold of that note.]
Mornin'.
[Only Diluc knew how it took Kaeya a bit to fully wake up, his charisma stat at absolute zero for a bit.]
[They may not be that close, but Jean sends him a present anyway. It's a new bridle of rather high quality that Jean made himself, but also a bottle of kinetic sand as a joke, since he knows how much his horse loves to play in sand.]
[He had been vaguely aware of Kaeya tossing and turning all night, but hadn't thought too much of it. The other man's sleep isn't always restful and the best Diluc can usually do is be there if he happens to wake up. They'd had a long, busy day chasing a quest posting around Frostreign, getting wet and cold right down to their bones and only able to warm up when they finally got back to their shared home.
One would think that being so closely linked to Cryo, Kaeya would be less affected by the cold, but it's Diluc who often serves as a human heater for them both.
When morning comes and Diluc wakes up first - as he often does - he's only slightly surprised to find Kaeya flushed and slightly clammy, and he presses the back of one hand lightly to his partner's forehead.]
[An equally miserable night to go with the miserable day they had in Frostreign. And, it's true, being a Cryo did afford some protection but for as soaked as they had gotten and for as long as they had been out there, it was inevitable that he ended up under the weather.
It started with the aching joints and muscles, he couldn't get comfortable. Now, he was clammy even though he felt cold still. Kaeya was curled up against Diluc when he felt the man place his hand on his head.
Kaeya wouldn't have to wake up by himself on the morning of his birthday, or even at the usual early hour that Diluc tends to slide out of bed at. The redhead manages to wait until a more hospitable hour, having put up a note of a day of closure at the shop the day before, then shifts over and plants kisses on his partner's face until he stirs.
"Morning," he hums lightly, wrapping an arm around the younger man and kissing the corner of his mouth.
As always, Kaeya wasn't really firing on all cylinders as soon as he was awake, especially when he wasn't waking up on his own volition. There were some pouts and scrunches eyebrows as he was pulled to the waking world, followed by a short whine.
But, once Diluc wished him a happy birthday, Kaeya started to understand what was going on.
